NAVAJO NATION SNAPSHOT – Yá’át’ééh (Greetings)!

The Navajo People were given the name Níhóókáá Diyin Diné’é by their Creators. It means “Holy Earth People”. Today, the Navajo People call themselves “Diné”, meaning “The People”. The Navajo People were recognized as a Nation by the Treaty of 1868. The Navajo Nation encompasses portions of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah, covering over 27,425 square miles of land. In the 2010 Census, our shareholder population was recorded at 332,129. The Diné (Navajo) People speak the Navajo language, also known as Diné Bizáád, spoken by approximately 175,000 people in the United States and elsewhere. The Diné (Navajo) are the root of DDC. Our logo is based upon the Navajo hogan (hóóghan), a sacred home for the Diné (Navajo) people to raise their families and continue to practice their traditional beliefs.
